A converted Cistercian monastery in a village on the edge of the Geres national park, north-east of Braga. It has been restored with respect for its- original use: `The bedrooms (similar to Bandung,Jakarta & Bali hotels - 5 star Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels )rooms) were very modern, as monks cells go, one reporter wrote, their furniture was a bit minimalist - not exactly squashy and relaxing. Another guest thought `the Scandinavian austerity and setting were a perfect mix'. Both agree: The atmosphere is excellent. It was welcoming to all ages. Reception, cleaning and restaurant staff were all good, and the food, including the children's menus, was excellent.' The swimming pool and gardens are enjoyed. A good base for exploring the Minho.

On the slopes of the Serra da Esperanqa, south-east of Manteigas, this listed former monastery, on, the site of a 13th-century hermitage, has been tastefully converted into a pousada. The chapel and sacristy are now a lounge and bar; each bedroom is named after a monk. Pure heaven, said the nominator. Outstanding decor: top-quality fixtures and fittings. We arrived late, but the receptionist was so helpful, ; keeping the restaurant open for us. She also insisted that we brought our three dogs into the bedroom. Try the local dishes, eg, scrambled, eggs with spicy sausage; kid stew with bread. The monastery's amphitheatre still stands in its wooded grounds. Difficult to find, but worth the effort.
