You can eat beneath trees on a terrace beside the Neckar, at this pleasant Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels )just across the river from a village east of Heidelberg (reached by regular buses), and backed by a wooded hill. Recent visitors praised the `charm and consideration' of the owner/chef, Gunter Ehrenhold, his wife, and their Newfoundland dog. `Service and welcome were excellent.' `Our double room was a good size; its bathroom was sparkling.' `Ours had a lovely view of the river, and half-timbered buildings on the other bank. We enjoyed eating outdoors, and the panoramic restaurant is smart.' `A delicious dinner, with superb local beer and wine' (another visitor thought the cooking rather plain'). The buffet breakfast is served in a winter garden, full of orchids. Barges, ducks and swans on the river, and ' church bells (after 7.30 am) add to the atmosphere.
