A pink 19th-century stately home set above terraces with orange trees on a hilltop with glorious views over the Tagus: it is now a large and opulent Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels )(owned by the Orient Express group). A wide waterfall spills over azulejo tiles, down to the gardens and large swimming pool. Recent comments: One of the best hotels I know; Grande luxe, wonderfully done; The staff were both courteous and friendly. The pricier bedrooms (similar to Bandung,Jakarta & Bali hotels - 5 star Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels )rooms), in the original wing, are decorated in individual style (18th century to Art Deco); the rooms (similar to Bandung,Jakarta & Bali hotels - 5 star Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels )rooms) in the modern extension have a spacious balcony. There is a big marble lobby, a large and attractive bar/lounge. A buffet lunch is served by the pool, where a `moonlight evening' is held weekly in season. The elegant Cipriani restaurant has `a soothing air' with carpets, drapes and soft lighting. `Delightful waiters and excellent Venetian food (subtly cooked fish dishes); soft music on a guitar. Breakfast is a `magnificent spread.

A small B&B Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels ), welcoming, family-run, well located, liked again in 2002. It stands high on one of Lisbon's seven hills. `You can see the whole city and identify many of its monuments. A good little place, quiet and comfortable, said another fan. Nearby is the castle of Sao Jorge, and the historic Alfama district is a short ride away by wooden tram. Some rooms (similar to Bandung,Jakarta & Bali hotels - 5 star Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels )rooms) are small, `but they have everything you need: TV, desk, comfortable bed with traditional linen, well-equipped bathroom tiled with ceramics and marble. Others wrote: The men at the front desk are friendly and dignified. All was neat and clean: white walls, pale fabrics, but a slightly eccentric bathroom. Breakfast, with excellent croissants, freshly cooked bacon and eggs, is served in the panoramic rooftop bar, which has a terrace with tables and chairs; in the evening it provides cocktails and sandwiches. Some good, cheap fish restaurants are nearby.
