A wonderful, friendly family Hotel ( Jakarta Hotels ): quite large, and built like a Catalan village, it stands amid trees and rocks on various levels around asmall harbour on a lovely stretch of the Costa Brava. Run by the fourth generation of one family, it returns to the Guide with positive reports in 2002. `As good as ever, says a visitor of 30 years standing. Another guest wrote: Ten happy days. Excellent food and service both restaurant and bar; many of the staff are long-serving Extra ordinarily good value off season: €186 for half board for tow in a small suite facing a bay. I was delighted, returning after a gap of eight years, by how well they have retained the quality and atmosphere of the place. In the big grounds are tables and chairs under para and a large swimming pool with a bar and plenty of loungers. And you can swim from tiny beaches, or off rocks. Only regret: Chez Henry's, their famous and great nightclub/bar, does not open until June.Many visitors are British. Nine golf courses in the area.

The weather can be chilly out of season, but there is a log fire in the lounge, and central heating. Even the sleepy local railway station has charm, and the small factories nearby are not obtrusive. Good for walking, by the stream and through oak woods, from the door - or further afield. The Pileta caves, with ancient paintings, are nearby.
